Hello all,

I thought it might be useful to address two things: Fear and Loathing.

Now before we rip out all the Hunter S. Thompson jokes we know, let me get the meat and potatoes out of the way.

Fear, is a reaction within sentient and semi-sentitent beings that is executed when we feel that our welfare is at risk in one way or another.

Loathing can be a result of fear, when you recognize the threat to your welfare, you hate it, you abhor it, it rankles you and you want it gone.

Alright, now discuss.

Discuss... in what context? You have two concepts here, but no context. Fear and loathing as they apply to you? Are you running away from them? What is it about these that you want to discuss exactly?...

Gonzo, pretty much everything you've said so far refers back, in one way or another, and rather defensively, to Hunter S. Are you on his trip, or your own?

Who is Hunter S?

Fear and loathing are both instinctual reactions but, like any instinct they can be overcome. Isn't that what true bravery is? Not the absence of fear but the ability to act in it's face, to overcome it.

Herbert in his Dune books says.... Fear is the mind killer, the little death. And he is right.

As for loathing, it is hate in another suit. Again hate can be overcome. Hate is often linked to fear. We hate something we fear... well humanity does... hence the witch hunts, homophobia, racism etc. But again it can be risen above.

Does this mean then that all fear can be over come by tolerance and understanding? No. So are there different kinds of fear or only different degrees?

Thoughts anyone?

Hunter S is short for Hunter S. Thompson, an american novelist and journalist who gained fame and noteriety through his novel "The Rum Diaries" and his journalism exploits which gave birth to a genre of journalistic writing known as "Gonzo Journalism".

He is best known for "Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream", a piece that is considered the predecessor to Gonzo and follows the adventures of Hunter (under the alias Raoul Duke) and his Lawyer, Oscar LaCasta (in reality, LaCasta was a big name in the Chicano Power Movement; in the book he is referred to as a "300 pound Samoan" named Dr. Gonzo). The book is notorious for it's drug use, and for being "almost impossible to believe".

The book was originally a piece for Sports Illustrated covering the Mint 400 race in Las Vegas in 1971, but it was rejected. Thompson tried again when he sent it to Rolling Stone, where it first met print and became a staple of American Literature.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has been called "A scorching epochyal sensation" and a "post-mortem of the 1960s counter-culture".

Hunter S. left us in 2005 when he committed suicide; he is succeeded by his wife Anita and I think he might have kids.
